what's new at liquid adventures (updated 03/21/08)

Spring Greetings from Tom and Nate at Liquid Adventures. We spent a wonderful winter this year in Mexico running many new rivers, climbing up 14,600' high Cerro Malinche, and arguing with the traffic police in Puebla city. We are back now and can be reached in the office, or be seen on the river at Dickerson and Cheat Training, or found teaching in the pool at the Lab School.

We are planning a fun season - with many trips and lessons to share with you. If you have any ideas for trips or adventures you would like us to help you with please get a hold of Tom or Nathan. Have a Happy Easter weekend! Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you on the river soon.

current and upcoming events
The titles below are links to more information.

winter pool rolling - Our pool sessions have started again on Saturdays at 5pm. We offer pool rolling for beginners, advanced paddlers, and youth. Open sessions are available - for those wanting to socialize and practice on their own. The pool is located at the Lab School in NW, DC.  We have several sessions in April and May that will help you to get ready for the river.

dickerson workouts- After a hiatus due to construction at the Mirant Power Plant, we are now able to resume our Sunday Dickerson Workouts. Workouts are held from 1:30 - 4 pm with a coached or uncoached option. Dickerson workouts have helped many of our paddlers get to a higher level of paddling in a safe and effective manner. To join our workouts you should be an intermediate paddler with a reliable roll and become a member of BCE.  Please note the recently posted news on the BCE website. You can also use it to stay on top of temporary course closures.  Due to the slalom race we won't be holding a workout on Sunday May 30.

day of creekin' - Sunday's in April are for creeking with Tom.  Learn how to run creeks in WV under Tom's guidance and leadership. You will learn to boof, boat scout rapids, set safety, and have a lot of fun learning a new style of boating.

yoga for paddlers–  Our yoga for paddlers class has proven quite beneficial to those attending. Sessions are held each Thursday at 6:30 pm in Cabin John. AJ McIntyre is our yoga instructor, known by many of you know from rolling lessons and Lower Yough trips. Classes are $20/session and a package discount is available. AJ is a certified yoga instructor (RYT) in Anasura yoga. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. More on AJ can be found at our blog

spring certification courses - LAKS offers three courses that lead to certification: River Rescue, Wilderness 1st Aid, CPR, and our renowned ACA kayak instructors course with Mark Moore and Tom. The WFA is full this year and we may offer another in the Fall. We do have space in our April, June, and August river rescue courses, and room in the Memorial Day weekend instructors course. These courses are great to take even if you never plan to teach, as they will help you become a more complete and aware boater.

may plp- Do you have a friend that wants to learn to paddle? Why not refer them to our Beginner or Intermediate Progressive Learning Package (PLP)? This is a sneaky way to set yourself up with a future paddling partner, while introducing your friend to an unparelled paddling experience. As an incentive, we will give you half off the next class you take with us. The Beginner PLP program is designed to get a motivated paddler paddling Class II water and rolling at the end of the month and has been the foundation for many of the paddlers you see on the Potomac and rivers beyond DC.  Our other river classes begin in May as well.

summer camp with liquid adventures - Very few people can say they have helped young people learn to paddle as Tom can. I think Tom is at his happiest when he is leading a youth trip whether it is in Canada, West Virginia, or the Potomac. I have met many of the graduates of Tom's programs, and l can honestly say that I wish I had been able to have been a camper in one of them. (Fortunately I can learn from him everyday while working at Liquid Adventures). Your children will thank you for letting them come to camp with Tom.

We offer 3 levels of week long summer camp. There are two overnight weeks and a day camp week. Our youth programs page has all the details.

stay up to date with us - We have been making efforts this winter towards keeping you all better informed this season. Most of you know to check the calendar for classes, but many of you may not know about our new blog. On it you will find class announcements, gear reviews, trip reports, and other fun things about Liquid Adventures. We also have a weekly events page listing the seasonal weekly schedule of recurring classes. You can also check the What's New Link anytime you like. You will soon be seeing a different newsletter format. We will be utilizing a new newsletter service called Constant Contact, I hope that it will help us to more effectively communicate fun paddling options for you over the course of the season.

potomac downriver race - lt is not too early to sign up for this years annual Potomac Downriver Race.  This race is great for a wide range of paddlers and is one of the oldest races in the country.  If racing is not your thing, consider helping out the CCA and volunteering for the race.  Our Cheat Training group will be in excellent shape to compete in the race on May 17th.
